Wonderful and full of wonder – that’s how day one of the much-anticipated Wonder Week Holiday Club could be described.

Following weeks of planning, multiple meetings and endless conversations, day one finally arrived and Rev. Naomi and an army of volunteers from the Over Wyre Benefice welcomed thirty-eight excited youngsters.

Once registration was completed, the children were encouraged to explore play areas in the glorious sunshine. Some chose the outdoor play toys, others headed towards the Creative Zone and immersed themselves in a spot of painting and craft, while the remainder engaged in a variety of innovative challenges, Lego and games.

The youngsters and Leaders came together for a group game with the colourful parachute. Squeals of delight and laughter rippled round as the children lifted, shook and created waves with the huge fabric disc, building teamwork and co-ordination skills.

Back inside church, snack-time called, and platters of toast, pancakes, pastries and fruit were enjoyed alongside badge-making and journal time.

Much to the delight of everyone gathered, Sparky, and the Professor’s Assistant – Sam, made an appearance, engaging in an amusing exchange, filled with a blend of witty misunderstandings and deeper truths. In a round-a-bout, child-friendly way, the story of Jesus’ Transfiguration unfolded, explaining how Jesus is the Son of God, fully man and fully God and concluded with the conviction that Jesus is our friend.

Action songs and energetic dancing gave way to more outdoor play in the Challenge, Curiosity, Craft and Chill zones. All areas were busy. Slime-making was a particular hit, and the children thoroughly enjoyed concocting both pastel and lurid, glow-in-the-dark colours of the stuff!

Lunch-time was a welcome break in the cooler church. Youngsters tucked into their picnics and watched a favourite ‘Wallace and Gromit’ film.

More fun in the Zones was followed by a final return to church for a child-led drama, recounting the main focal story of the day – the Transfiguration. They were creative in their delivery, including music and audience response! It was very well-received.

A final group challenge ended a day full of activity, excitement and fun. Youngsters were collected with armfuls of craft and memorabilia from the day’s activities. More than likely, there would have been a lot of chatter over tea-time tables to share with their grown-ups!
