Service of Thanksgiving for the Ministry of Fr. Peter and Adele
14th September 2025
Sunday 14th September was a meeting of hearts. Six churches, five parishes, one Parish Priest and his much-loved lady came together for a super-special, emotionally-charged service of thanksgiving on the occasion of their retirement, celebrated by Rev. Naomi at St. James’ Stalmine.
A full church was testament to the high esteem in which Fr. Peter and Adele were held. Together, they have loved their ministry in the Over Wyre Benefice and in return, they have been taken deep into the hearts of parishioners.
Flowers, lovingly arranged, adorned key spaces; music for the service had been practised with love. Bakers across the churches generously donated their labours of love and those with reading roles during this occasion had lovingly rehearsed their words.
Fr. Peter delivered the homily on a ‘lovely letter’ from St. Paul to the Philippians (2:6-11), a piece of Scripture very close to his heart, which he has always cherished. The love and passion he had for St. Paul’s words was evident for all to see.
The youngsters also had abundant love to share. During their time in Sunday Club, they created some special ‘Thank You’ cards for Fr. Peter and Adele. They participated in the Offertory procession, they delighted in assisting Rev. Naomi at the altar and adored the responsibility of receiving the monetary gifts following the collection.
More than 250 images of Fr. Peter and Adele at work and play over the past three years had been lovingly compiled into an on-screen presentation and shared with the congregation, capturing the depth and breadth of their ministry. Together, they had engaged with each church, worked with schools, collaborated with the local communities, embraced local village traditions, taken part in family beach days, joined in inter-faith events, played a part in taking church beyond the church pews and shared in momentous life events of the young, the elderly and all those in-between.
Gifts, chosen with love, were presented to mark the retirement of Fr. Peter and Adele. Emotions were running high, but the flow of love was palpable.
Rev. Naomi prayed over the retiring couple. Her words, inspired by her love for them and their shared loving faith were moving.
It had been the loveliest of services, brimming over in kindliness, affection, and full of good-hearted people. Right at the heart of it, were two very special people who will be missed beyond words.
