‘Come Holy Spirit, help us to be more aware of your presence,

Come Holy Spirit, we welcome you into our lives,

Show us your power and let us feel your peace, so that your presence may be felt in our lives.’

These words, spoken by Rev. Naomi, brought the most recent Raise and Praise service to a close.

The concept of the Holy Spirit may have been a difficult subject to examine, but without doubt, all those gathered leaving the service, had a deeper understanding, having been immersed in a series of linked activities.

At the beginning of the service, Rev. Naomi encouraged all to take a deep breath in, taking time to become aware of the surrounding world, before turning to the focus chosen – the Holy Spirit. She explained how the Old Testament testifies to the presence of the Holy Spirit at the start of creation and how that same Spirit breathes life into us today, bringing comfort and awakening hope.

Those in the congregation shared how goodness had touched their lives over the past few days, in ways large and small, each one, a reminder that goodness threads its way through our days.

Rev. Naomi then moved the conversation on to how we may notice unusual things when the Holy Spirit is close. This may be an idea or image in the mind, or a feeling of God’s love, peace and comfort.

The children helped to tell the story of Pentecost, with emphasis on the sounds of rushing wind, the sight of flames above the Disciples’ heads and the overwhelming feelings of God’s power and love.

Activities brought the account to life. The effects of wind and breath were explored. Symbolic doves were crafted; sources of power were considered and the effects of power observed. Blowing down straws and moving objects along with the power of breath helped the youngsters understand the concept. Rev. Naomi explained how the Holy Spirit is God’s breath, God’s power and God’s love living inside us, helping us every day.

Most aptly, the action song, ‘Tidal Wave’ brought the service to a close, a powerful song, full of movement.

Raise and Praise takes place every first and third Saturday in the month.
