Judging from the wide-open church door at St. John the Evangelist, Out Rawcliffe, the invitation was clear: ‘you are welcome, step inside’.

Led by Rev. Naomi, this Holy Communion service brought all five parishes together under one church roof. The church was full and the Sunday Schoolroom was also filled to capacity.

Taking inspiration from the day’s readings, Rev. Naomi spoke engagingly about some interesting connections between a recent, popular TV programme, ‘Race Across the World’ and the words just heard from the Old and New Testament. Visually and textually, a sense of movement is evident in both. They are free-flowing as journeys move onwards. Both feature people who are powerless and in difficult, challenging circumstances. Both capture keeping strong in faith. Both seek refuge in and benefit from the transformational, healing power of the encouraging words, ‘TAKE HEART’.

The children also learned about the same story in the schoolroom, and put together some ‘Kindness Kits’ to gift to someone in need. They engaged in some finger painting, exploring how touch can be powerful and life-giving. They enjoyed sharing their creations with Rev. Naomi and the congregation.

There was also a very special tribute paid to Edith, for her 55 years of faithful service in playing the church organ. She was presented with a framed certificate of service by Rev. Naomi, congratulated and prayed over.

In the tradition of all good gatherings, the morning ended with refreshments and an opportunity to catch-up with friends across the churches.
