The Transfiguration

A mountain, a small, select group of friends, thick cloud, an ethereal glow and two prophets…such a diverse list could only point to one Bible story – the Transfiguration.

At the latest Raise and Praise service, Rev. Naomi introduced the complex story of the transfiguration as the main theme. Kim then shared the story with those gathered, about a time when Jesus took some of His close friends up a mountain. This was an incredibly special occasion for these friends, providing them with a unique opportunity to be alone with Jesus. When they reached the top of the mountain, something completely amazing happened.  As Jesus was praying, a cloud descended from heaven and a voice said, “This is my Son, whom I love; I am well pleased with Him. Listen to Him!” It was at this point that Jesus’ face started to glow brightly, just like the sun and his clothes turned sparkling white. Unexpectedly, Moses and Elijah, two Old Testament prophets appeared and started talking with Jesus.

Rev. Naomi spoke about how we too can meet with God in unexpected places and spaces.

Following the story, activity time was spent crafting mountains, stained glass windows, and other items recreating Jesus in his glowing robes.

The group reconvened to share communion.  Rev. Naomi reflected on the symbolism of the Bread and Wine before the children distributed them to the congregation.

The service ended with prayer, asking that we may we hear Jesus’ voice today.

As always, this family-friendly service seamlessly blended stories, crafts and songs to explore faith, in a visual, audible and hands-on way.
